Everybody Has A Guy.

Got a leak in your roof? Your friend has a guy you should talk to, got a skin rash you can’t identify on Google? Your mom has a guy.  Wow, that is a big plumbing leak in your garage, I’ve got a guy.  Referrals from friends can be a powerful tool, one we think can save us tons of money, one we think we can rely on,  but please consider this before you call your buddy’s GUY for a new web site and SEO….

Experience:
His guy may have taken one course in advanced computer / printer hooking up, this does not qualify him as being an SEO or web design / marketing ‘guy’.

Track Record:
Just because your buddy’s guy built a web site once for a company once back in the 90′s that doesn’t sell anything remotely related to what your company sells doesn’t qualify him to take your online presence to the next level.

Professionalism:
So your buddy’s guy likes to meet at Starbucks or the Home Depot Hot Dog Stand to discuss your multi million dollar company and it’s online presence: sure, there’s nothing like a dirty water dog and an ice cold Coke, but this is your business we’re talking about.

Buzz Words:
Just because your buddy’s guy claims to know what an H1 tag is or speaks in circles about title tags and redirects doesn’t mean he actually has a clue about how to achieve SEO results. Remember this, Guru status seems to be one click away with the Internet, you read one SEO forum and BAZINGA, you’re an instant SEO guru / expert / swami / emperor, etc.

As with anything, the proof is in the pudding.  Be sure to interview a few companies when you are seeking an Internet marketing firm.  Do they sub their SEO work? If so, to where? Who writes the content? Is it written for people or just for search engines? MOST IMPORTANTLY: Can you find their clients online or even them? If you can’t find them, how can they get your products / services found?
