About Tom
I learned marketing from monks, clients and a lot of coffee.
I spent four years at a very remote Benedictine monastery in Southern Indiana, studying English and communications at Saint Meinrad. The view from my dorm (they call it a cell, which is not great branding) was corn and soybeans. It turns out that's a pretty great place to learn how words actually move people.
In 2005 I took that into the real world and started On Target Digital Marketing. I ran it for 15 years, built a team of 11, guided hundreds of B2B and B2C brands across the country, and sold it at its peak. I also leased an office that was way too big, so I turned the extra space into Coffee and Content: a place where people came to learn, present and make real business connections over coffee I roasted myself. That coffee eventually grew up and became Pure Grind.
Since the agency, I've led marketing from the inside. Head of Marketing at Steamroller Animation Studios. Chief Marketing Officer at Camp Boggy Creek. Launch marketing for Step Up For Students. And now, growing an EdTech startup through partnerships. Different industries, same obsession: how marketing actually lands on a human being.
Along the way I've racked up 400+ TV appearances as a digital marketing and tech expert, which mostly taught me that live television does not have an undo button.
I write about all of it in my field notes: what works, what's hype, and the occasional absurdity that keeps this industry entertaining.
How I lead
Five things my teams can count on.
Humans before dashboards.
Impressions are nice. Trust pays the bills. We measure everything, but we start with the person on the other end of the message.
Zig on purpose.
Copying the category leader isn't strategy. It's camouflage. We go find the thing only this brand can say.
Ship it.
Perfectionism is procrastination in a fancy coat. Launch, learn, improve. Repeat before the competition finishes its kickoff meeting.
Keep your rockstars.
High performers rarely quit over money alone. They quit when nobody's listening. I listen, clear the path and give credit loudly.
Culture, not Kool-Aid.
Alignment is healthy. Blind devotion is not. I want a team that pushes back, asks why, and makes the work better because of it.
The long version
Where I've been, and what I left better.
Growing an EdTech startup through partnerships
Building the partner marketing engine at an early-stage EdTech company: co-marketing programs, channel strategy, and the kind of partner stories that turn "we should work together" into pipeline.
Launch marketing, Step Up For Students
Brought in to launch Step Up, Step Further, basically a startup inside a mission: brand strategy, website, CRM, fundraising comms, crisis planning and a statewide plan to get K-12 scholarships to Florida kids.
Chief Marketing Officer, Camp Boggy Creek
A medical camp for kids with serious illnesses, which is the best reason I know to get marketing right. Unified the brand, landed media coverage, grew every digital channel, built the content strategy, grew new donors 67%, and filled more camper and volunteer spots.
Head of Marketing, Steamroller Animation Studios
First marketing hire. Rebuilt the studio's whole digital presence, built the team, launched the studio's first IP video game, landed a Best Places to Work in Central Florida nod, and somehow walked away with the key to the City of Mount Dora.
Communications & Marketing, Bethune-Cookman University
Rebuilt social and content strategy after a communications restructure, grew the donor-facing story, and had the honor of writing speeches for the President and the Academic Dean.
Founder & CEO, On Target Digital Marketing
Built a full-service agency (strategy, SEO, branding, content, design, social, paid and analytics), led a team of 11, steered hundreds of B2B and B2C accounts nationwide, and sold it at its peak. Coffee and Content was born here too.
Pure Grind Coffee
Launched my own coffee brand, because apparently one business wasn't enough caffeine. Positioning, packaging, ecommerce, the whole pour.
Giving back, with a gavel
Board President, Doglando Foundation and Michelee Puppets. Board of Directors, Orlando Science Center. Digital Marketing Chair, Maitland Chamber of Commerce.
BA, English & Communications, Saint Meinrad College
Pour Le College Award and President's List. Also four years of very quiet reflection, which is excellent training for surviving a bad brainstorm.
Coffee's on me.
A speaking gig, a brand that needs a reality check, or a conversation about what's next. I'm always up for talking shop.
